Rex The Reindeer

Just thought I'd sneak in and share this pattern before the end of the year.
Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas /celebration with family or friends.
I'm spending some time now, to make beanies for the K4BN Summer Challenge. The requirement is to make beanies for the children in our outback aboriginal communities. Sizes needed are from toddler to teenagers so it will be nice to make some little ones as well as some adult sizes.

Poor Rex wasn't ready Christmas Eve to help Santa, he was only finished Boxing Day, (Boxing Day for us is the day after Christmas).
You might recognize him as Fester the Goat with a few mods, his legs are longer, his ears are shorter & his head is on upside down with some mods as well.
With the changes, and the addition of his reindeer "bits" I thought he deserved his own pattern.
Rex is so cute I won't be packing him away, he can sit on my work table with one of Fester's brothers. Hopefully he'll remind me to start knitting for Christmas earlier next year.

Sew up the front of legs, until you meet up with the front seam of upper body, making sure both legs are of equal length as you sew towards the front seam. Sew the back legs up, but leave the back seam to stuff.

Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year

This is my last post for the year. It's almost been a year since I started blogging. I've met some lovely people & have loved reading their blog posts along the way.
I've learnt a lot of new computer skills from slowly teaching myself how to blog, so I'm pleased I got the courage up to start blogging & put up some patterns.
Thank you so much to all the lovely people who have liked my tea cosy patterns along the way.
My family & I would like to wish everyone a very happy & safe Christmas & New Year.

Take care,
love Jenny.

Christmas Bear & Cat Baubles.

The last silly little pattern of the year, I promise! A bit close to Christmas I know, but I've been busy finishing gifts & all the other "mum" stuff one needs to do before Christmas.

I used to make these in fabric as a smaller version of my  Message Bears. The bears I would make from flanelette, reindeers from homespun, but these are so much easier to knit. No turning seams & you can use a furry yarn for the bears if you wish.
At 10cm tall they are a large decoration for the tree, but a good size if you want to write a name in glitter on the bauble. You can make them smaller by using smaller needles & finer yarn.
Of course you don't have to glue them to a bauble, you can make tiny ones for the tree, or put two together for a friend like the message bears.
To save time writing the pattern, the body is in chart form Here.
Errata : rows in hat instructions with * have been altered - 19/12/2011.
Materials :
50gm 8ply / DK for the body.
Small amount 8ply / DK in 2 colours for hat.
3.25mm knitting needles for body
4.00mm knitting needles for hat.
fibre filling
black embroidery cotton & black, pink yarn for features.
2 beads for bear eyes
Christmas Bauble - the ones I used were aprox 19cm circumference.
Hot Glue gun.

 Instructions.
For Bear Body
Make a front & back.
Using 3.25mm needles & bear colour cast on 38sts.
Working in garter stitch, follow chart starting at the bottom right hand corner, read from right to left, first row, left to right for second row etc.
Stitch the bear pieces together on the outside (don't do a seam then turn right side out)  leaving a gap at the bottom for stuffing.
Stuff the head fairly firmly, but only stuff the body, arms & legs very very lightly & sew up open seam. Because the bear wraps around the bauble & is hot glued, you only need a small amount of stuffing.
Even here in this photo, I've stuffed the body too much & had to squish it flat a bit, so stuff less.

Sew a gathering thread around the neck & tighten to define the head from the body a bit more.
Ears - With 3.25mm needles cast on 8sts.
Garter St 4 rows.
Decrease each end of every row until 4 sts remain.
Cast Off.
Hat - The hat is quite large & slouchy to go over one ear.
With 4mm needles & brim colour cast on 24sts.
Garter st 3 rows.
Change to hat colour & St st 8 rows.
Next row - K2, (k2 tog, k4) to last 2 sts, k2.
St st 3 rows.
*Next row - K2, (k2tog, k3) to last 3sts, k2tog, k1.
St st 3 rows.
Next row - (K2 k2tog) to end.
St st 3 rows.
Next row - (K2, k2tog) to end.
St st 3 rows.
Next row - (K1, k2 tog) to end.
P 1 row.
*Next row -K2 tog to end.
*P2 tog, P1.
Cast off.
Join seam.

Make up
Gather in the base of the ears a little then sew to bear head.
Sew hat on at an angle over ear & then down around back of head, add a bell.
Using 3 strands of black embroidery cotton sew in paws. Sew on beads for eyes & sew on nose & mouth.

To glue to bauble
I use gold thread through the top of the head to hang them, instead of  using the hanger on the bauble. If you want to hang it from the bauble make sure you glue the hanger on the bauble as close to the bear body as you can, or else the weight of the bear will make them hang "back heavy" (if that makes sense).
Check first the bear is not over stuffed. You need to be able to bend it around & glue the paws in place without much resistance. See photo, glue bauble on an angle so the hanger is to the side of the face. Put glue on the bear, not the bauble. Start by putting a little on the tummy to hold the bauble in place. Glue the paws into place, but make sure you put the glue at least 1cm back from the edge of the paw as it will spread when pressed. Hold each paw a few moments while the glue sets, before doing the next one.

Cat
Same as the bear but with the whole back done in 4row stripes. The front is striped until you get to the head, then all white from there.
Ears
With 3.25mm needles & orange cast on 8sts.
Garter st 2 rows.
Decrease each end of every row until 2 stitches remain
K2 tog fasten off.
All done.

Still counting down....

Santa's coming further down the Chimney

The Elf is in charge of turning the date blocks

The chuppa chups are dissapearing

and Santa is test driving the reindeers.

Everyone is on their best behaviour & waiting patiently for the big man in red to arrive - not long now!
I asked the kids (aged 17 - 21) if they wanted the lolly advent & all the Christmas "stuff" out this year - they said yes.
I suppose the memories you have of Christmas growing up, stays with you your whole life. My son said he always feels Christmassy when he walks in & they love having their big Christmas dinner every year. Even though it's hard work for me, I'll continue doing it until someone else takes over. My memories of Christmas as a child are, very old glass Santa Claus lights on the tree, visiting my Grandparents every Christmas Eve at their lovely Queenslander up in Spring Hill & a huge rag doll, must have been more than a metre high (or so I remember), dressed in a pale green dress that my Mother lovingly made - the things you remember! Festive The Whole Goat.

Well yes that's it really....just a photo.
But be impressed, I did knit holes into his Christmas hat so he could put his horns through.
And yes I do have more important things to do with my time :-)
eta - The pattern for "Fester the whole goat" is here on my blog for those who haven't visited before - Jen.

Gift Santas, Santa Garlands

Hi all,
Here are the Santa Garlands & Gift Santas, all these stars are so simple to make, great for children to crochet for cheap gifts. I've used the same vintage pattern as before.  http://www.freevintagecrochet.com/christmas/santa-claus-star.html
For both I've used 8ply/dk and a 3.50mm crochet hook to make smaller stars & a tighter fabric & I'm using English terminology dc (sc for US).

I found the original pattern bulges a bit as you crochet the circle, that didn't really bother me for the stuffed Santas & the gift Santas below as it actually helped shape both designs.

For the Santa garlands though, after round 2, I added another dc (sc) to every round up to round 7, which gave me 40dc. That gave me a smaller star, with 8dc for every point. Following the pattern, for each arm & leg point I did 5 rows red, 2 white & the rest black. For the gloves on all the stars I did less rows to finish, I just preferred them a bit shorter than the original. The face point I did 2 red, 3 flesh, 2 white & the rest red.
The beard, I fastened white to the first row of flesh on the face & worked a dc around the back of each dc's post. Continue with 1ch, 6dc the next row, then decrease each end of every row until you have 1 dc, fasten off.

Finish with beads for the eyes, jingle bells on the hats & star buttons on their bellies. I found they bend over a bit hanging from hand to hand, but a bit of spray starch on the backs should stiffen them enough to behave. I've run out of wall space with Christmas, so hanging them like this filled a narrow space nicely.

                                                                              Gift Santas
The Gift Santa here uses the star pattern with a circle of 8 rounds just using the original pattern, giving you 45dc - 9dc for each point.   Join the hands in the middle then sew the bottom edge of the hands/arms to the legs, putting Santa in a seated position, using the centre of the legs as a starting point. Hot glue a lightweight metallic star onto his hat to finish, unless it's for a young child.
This size holds about 5 wrapped chocs/ lollies or a small gift.
Love to all
Jen.

14 year old pasta.

Aaawwww we made these 14 years ago to give to teachers as Christmas cards. My son & I made them, he wrote his message on the back first, painted glue all over the card & stuck on the bow pasta. Of course I sprayed the gold & we sprinkled the glitter on when it was still wet. This one we kept to hang at home.
My son is 20 now.
14 year old pasta never looked so good!

Counting Down

Santa is making his way down the Chimney, only 20 days to go!

I never put Christmas up on the first of December. I'm a slacker. Well I did when the kids were little, but the four weeks of clutter drives me nuts! I have a few handmade Santa's, & wooden stuff & the Tree is quite intrusive in the lounge room, where it sits behind a lounge, close to the front entrance.
It means moving the lounge forward (the one I sit & knit on) & the coffee table which has a shelf full of knitting books, & a couple of bags of yarn & projects have to move with me.
The lounge room is quite long so there is still plenty of space. So I'm sitting here tonight, pushed a little closer to the TV which isn't a bad thing, because I can see it better, writing this post with a Christmas tree loomimg behind me with dare I say not one decoration on it! Have you guessed I'm writing this blog post to avoid putting up decorations?
DH always puts the tree up as it's quite complex (no it isn't), and I don't think I could work out how to do it (suppose I could) but I just ran out of time today. So he put the tree up when he got home without me asking, not because he's all Christmassy but probably because he hates seeing boxes everywhere & wants to put the empties back into the shed.
I did open boxes today, and was greeted with all of my old friends, that I so lovingly packed away last year with moisture pellets to keep them fresh. It only feels like three months since then, but the calendar assures me it's been a whole year. Actually the first post I did on this blog was about putting away Christmas, does that mean I need to have a birthday party for the blog, with cake & pressies??
So anyway I put three Christmas things out today, the three things in the photo, that's as far as I got lol.
Had better go & put something on the tree,
Merry Christmas
Jen.
ps DS has just offered to start decorating the tree - miracles do happen!!
